  • CROSSING THE RUBICON – EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES AND CAPACITY-BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES BETWEEN MARSHALLS AND GHANA NAVY PERSONNEL

In our pursuit to continue delivering cutting-edge education and fostering lasting relationships, Marshalls University College, under the visionary leadership of our Founder and President, Dr. Tetteh Nettey, is happy to announce an exciting new phase of working with the Ghana Navy. On Wednesday, the 4th of September 2024, Dr. Nettey, alongside Prof. Kofi Boakye, Dean of Academic Affairs and Executive Secretary of the Marshalls Doctoral Faculty (MDF), paid a significant working visit to the Ghana Navy Headquarters at Burma Camp, Accra.

This follows a prior engagement on the 9th of June 2023, when our students and faculty embarked on an enriching educational trip to the Western Naval Command at Sekondi-Takoradi. This visit signifies a deeper commitment to forging meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships between Marshalls University College and the Ghana Navy.

A WARM RECEPTION AND FRUITFUL DISCUSSIONS

The Marshalls team was graciously received by Commodore Bright Emmanuel Kojo Atiayao, Chief Staff Officer (CSO) at the Naval Headquarters in Accra. The visit was not only an opportunity for both institutions to reconnect but also to chart a path for strategic joint-effort aimed at enhancing the educational experiences and capacity-building opportunities between Ghana Navy personnel and Marshalls University College students and staff.

During a padre session with the officers of the Ghana Navy, Dr. Nettey and Prof. Boakye shared insights into areas of potential collaboration that could be developed for mutual benefit. Further to that, the conversation was centred around knowledge exchange programmes between the two institutions, designed to equip their personnel with critical skills that align with the needs of management, modern defence strategies, leadership, global maritime operations, and governance.

CROSSING OUR RUBICON: EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

As Julius Caesar’s decision to cross the Rubicon signalled a point of no return, cementing his commitment to a path that would forever change history, so too has this collaboration between Marshalls University College and the Ghana Navy marked the beginning of a transformative journey. The discussions have laid the foundation for a future of mutual learning and growth, opening the door to numerous opportunities for both institutions.

Here are some key points that were shared during the session:

  1. Introduction to Marshalls University College
Dr Nettey provided an engaging overview of Marshalls University College, sharing our history, mission, and vision. Our accreditation with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), affiliations, additional regulations by the Ghana Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and finally, the listing of Marshalls University College on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) were highlighted, underscoring our credibility, transparency, and accountability—qualities that mirror the values of the Ghana Navy.
  2. Tailored Academic Programmes
In line with our vision of shaping future leaders, we presented detailed information on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are particularly relevant to naval and maritime officers. These programmes are designed to equip military personnel with strategic thinking, leadership, and technical skills that will bolster their capacity to handle complex, high-stakes environments.
  3. Research and Innovation
The Marshalls team highlighted our commitment to research and innovation, showcasing ongoing projects that are poised to benefit the naval and maritime sectors. The intersection of academia and military operations offers a unique opportunity for our institutions to collaborate on research that addresses the specific needs of Ghana’s Navy and its strategic imperatives.
  4. Collaborations and Partnerships
Our existing collaborations with industry players such as Adansi Travels, Travel Nurse US, and other global recruiters were also presented. These partnerships demonstrate our commitment to preparing our students for a competitive global workforce, and we see the potential for the Ghana Navy to benefit from these collaborations in their professional development initiatives.
  5. Student and Personnel Opportunities
Marshalls University College offers a wealth of opportunities for students and professionals alike. From scholarships such as the Presidential Award to tailored internships and career opportunities in fields like Marketing, Hospitality, Tourism, leadership, governance, and strategic management, we aim to provide naval personnel with the tools they need to succeed, both within the military and beyond.
  6. Alumni Success Stories
To further illustrate our impact, we shared the inspiring success stories of our alumni who have made significant strides in various sectors, including leadership, governance, banking, finance, the legal field, hospitality, and business. These testimonials stand as a testament to the transformational power of a Marshalls education and its relevance in the world of work today.

A STRATEGIC VISION FOR THE FUTURE

As a forward-thinking institution, Marshalls University College remains committed to exploring new avenues that align with our core values of integrity, innovation, possibilities, and excellence. The collaboration with the Ghana Navy is a clear reflection of our dedication to building capacity and fostering leadership within key sectors of the country.

By combining our strengths in academic excellence with the Ghana Navy’s commitment to national security and defence, we envision a future where our partnership can serve as a model for other institutions seeking to contribute to national development through education.

As this partnership evolves, Marshalls University College will continue to provide bespoke educational solutions that meet the unique needs of the Ghana Navy, ensuring that their personnel remain competitive in today’s fast-changing world.

THE PATH FORWARD

Looking ahead, we are excited about the possibilities that this partnership will unlock. From joint research projects to knowledge-sharing initiatives, both institutions stand to gain immensely. We are confident that this working visit will lead to meaningful outcomes, not just for our students and faculty but for the nation at large.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Commodore Bright Emmanuel Kojo Atiayao, Very Rev. Commander Quayson, The Director, Naval Religious Affairs at the Naval Headquarters, who was very generous with logistical support and time, and the entire officers of the Ghana Navy Headquarters for their warm reception and active participation in our discussions. Together, we will build a brighter future, one that is fortified by education, discipline, and strategic vision.
