PRESIDENTIAL VISIT TO MIDDLESEX UNIVERSITY, MAURITIUS
On Friday, the 19th of July, 2024, Dr. Tetteh Nettey, Founder and President of Marshalls University College, and Mrs. Genevieve Nettey, a director of Meridian-Marshalls Holdings (MMH), the parent company of Meridian Pre-University and Marshalls University College, paid a courtesy visit to Middlesex University in Mauritius.
Ms. Melissa Thetika, a Master’s degree-level student at Middlesex University, met them at the university entrance to welcome them.
THE BEGINNING
A few years ago, Mr. Rakesh from Middlesex University, Mauritius, visited Ghana and made a courtesy call on the Founder and President of Meridian Pre-University during its early years. Subsequently, the two institutions entered into an agreement to collaborate, aiming to bring mutual benefit.
THE SUCCESS STORY
This partnership has enabled graduates of Meridian Pre-University to pursue studies at Middlesex University in Mauritius. Notable amongst them is Ms. Anita Siaw. Anita Siaw read Business Studies at Meridian Pre-University, where she earned a Diploma in Business Studies. Utilising her diploma, she applied for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Middlesex University, Mauritius, graduating in 2016. She then completed her National Service at the Office of the Attorney General & Ministry of Justice in Ghana, followed by a Master’s degree at the University of Ghana in LLM, Oil and Gas Law (2018). Furthering her legal studies, she attended the University of Westminster for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice for Solicitors.
In 2021, she served as a Research Assistant at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice under the Director of Research and Documentation, before attending the Ghana School of Law in 2022 and being called to the Ghana Bar in 2023.
Anita Siaw’s success story is one that is shared between Meridian Pre-University and Middlesex University, Mauritius, which the leadership of Marshalls University College would like to replicate.
THE HOPE
For Marshalls, this visit presented an opportunity to strengthen the existing ties between Meridian Pre-University and Middlesex University, while also expanding the collaboration to include Marshalls University College. On Middlesex University’s side, the Recruitment & Business Development Manager indicated that although Middlesex Mauritius does not currently offer programmes in Fashion, Hospitality, and some other fields, graduates from Meridian Pre-University and Marshalls can follow a similar academic pathway to Anita Siaw’s, pursuing courses such as Law, IT, and others available at the Mauritius campus.
Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University’s Mauritian campus, was unfortunately unavailable to meet with the team from Marshalls. Nevertheless, two senior university members, Zaein Rattansi – Recruitment & Business Development Manager, and Vanessa Ramchandar – Marketing & Admissions Manager graciously hosted the team for this pivotal meeting.
Both teams have committed to finalising the framework and qualification requirements that will guide their collaboration moving forward, particularly following the anticipated meeting between Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University, Mauritius and Dr. Tetteh Nettey, Founder and President of Marshalls University College.
During the visit, the Marshalls University College team enjoyed a tour of Middlesex University’s Mauritius campus, gaining insights into its state-of-the-art facilities.
THE ACCOLADES
Middlesex university’s history can be traced to 1878 when its founding institute, St. Katharine’s College, was established in Tottenham as a teacher training college for women. Having merged with several other institutes, the university was consolidated in its current form in 1992. It is one of the post-1992 universities (former polytechnics).
The university has student exchange links with over 100 universities in 22 countries across Europe, the United States, and the world. More than 140 nationalities are represented at Middlesex’s Hendon campus alone. Additionally, it has campuses in Dubai and Mauritius as well as a number of local offices across the globe. Courses are delivered by the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Professional and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of the Arts and Creative Industries.
In 2023, it was awarded an overall rating of Silver by the Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework. The university has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize three times and has twice received Queen’s Award for Enterprise for its international work.
Marshalls University College, on the other hand, gained accreditation in 2012 from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Commission for Technical and Vocational Education Training (CTVET), and OTHM, UK, and is one of the subsidiary members of Meridian-Marshalls Holdings (MMH), the only educational initiative listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE).
THE POTENTIAL
Looking ahead, there is optimism that this year, representatives from Middlesex University, Mauritius, may visit Ghana, including a potential visit to the Marshalls Campus, to further solidify and expand the partnership between our esteemed institutions.
